To the wonderful people of Japan,

It is with sadness and shock that we watch the news of Japan currently from Australia. To those involved our hearts go out to you and our wishes of recovery, survival and support are with you.

It is something personally I am finding hard to comprehend. What is being experienced in your Country is devastating and words cannot do it justice. Many years ago I travelled to Japan with my father for sport. I recall how I felt about your country and the people back then. You are beautiful, proud and strong.

Know that thoughts of love and support are with you all. I hope you can find the strength to realise you can not only survive this but thrive in the face this adversity. The courage and human spirit you will find during this time to confront this huge and significant challenge will inspire us the World over.

From Australia

My children and I watched in stunned silence as the earthquake and tsunami were shown to us here on television. I cannot imagine how frightened you were. The strength of your spirit and the human need to help others is what will get you through the devastation. Our prayers are with you. We are looking forward to seeing your smiles once more.

We are all thinking of you in this tough time. Stay focused on your goal of recovery and you will rise to all of the challenges that need to be overcome with grace and good humour. It is often true that from adversity springs opportunity, if you will let it. There is an approach to sports training that requires the 5 P’s, which can equally be applied to how to stay focused on the course of rebuilding:
• Perseverance – the ability to try and try and try and try – and to never give up;
• Patience – it takes time to get where you want and often needs consistent hard work;
• Physical training – through maintaining a  level of physical fitness, you can also keep your mind healthy and a balanced approach to your challenges;
• Personality – success at whatever you do is supported by a number of personality traits, including determination, commitment, the ability to overcome adversity and the capacity for accelerated learning;
• Passion – it helps to love what you are doing to be able to do it well.
Wishing you every success in rapidly overcoming this adversity and building a solid platform to take advantage of your opportunities.

Olympic Rower and Medallist

The One

The other day my friend Carol asked me to write a message of support and encouragement to the proud and stoic people of Japan.

I of course agreed and then the found myself in a dilemma.  I thought “what could I possibly say to the millions of people who’re affected to let them know that they are not forgotten, alone and that my thoughts are with them?”

There are not enough combinations of words that I could say or write that could make a difference to everyone, so, I’ve just thought I’d focus on the one person who may find you my words helpful and comforting during this uncertain time.

This is my message to you.

Everything from this time forward will be defined in terms of “before” & “after”.

This is your time.

- You are brave and have immense courage as you work within your community to help where and however you can.
- You won’t feel brave or that you being courageous- but, you are.
- You feel overwhelmed by all that’s so suddenly happened- that’s understandable, we all have our limits.
- Some days you’ll feel there is no way you can keep going – take a break, it’s OK.
- Take your time – if you need some help, please ask for it, you are very strong by doing so.
- You’ve suffered personally already, but thankfully/hopefully you find your own suffering and loss lessened by listening/helping others.
-  The things you do will seem futile and insignificant as the tasks seem never-ending.
- Take it “bit-by-bit, day-by-day”.
- You must know you are making a difference no matter how small the task.

When the critical time has passed, I promise to come and see wonderful beautiful Japan for myself.  If I’m super lucky I may even get the chance to meet you.

You are not alone.
You are not forgotten.
You are an inspiration.

My thoughts are with you.
